Joi McClary has proofread many of my manuscripts. I always thought I was a pretty good proofreader myself, but Joi has proved beyond any doubt that I don’t know everything about grammar, usage, and spelling. In fact, I’m always astounded by how much she finds. Did you know that “brokenhearted” and “peekaboo” are not hyphenated, that “Adventureland” and “wineglass” are one word, that “bennies” should not be capitalized, or that are ellipses (...) are available as a symbol in Word? Neither did I, until I started working with Joi. I’ve learned these things and many, many more from her. She notices everything! Recently, Joi transcribed nearly 60 one-hour interviews for a research project of mine. This would have taken me nearly 420 hours if I had done them myself. I realized that my time would be better spent in data analysis rather than transcription because, unlike Joi, I cannot type at the speed of conversation.
